Sidewiki allows you to leave a comment or annotate any web page on the internet. Currently, it requires Google Toolbar to use Sidewiki although people have found workarounds to read Sidewiki comments by other methods. This video gives a demo of how to use it, how it works, and some pros and cons. Check it out and let me know what you think!

I didn’t know how to do this offhand, so I researched a bit and found a lot of recommendations for a particular software package. It’s called Duplicate Annihilator and it does exactly what you asked for. Unfortunately, it’s not free and costs $7.95, but that seems like a small price to pay to do such a tiring task. It can be found here: http://u.nu/8yhb Thanks for the question WizzKid!

There are several ways to watch live TV on Mac, but my product of choice is the El Gato USB Hybrid http://u.nu/3yeb . You can simply connect your cable or satellite box to this device and you’ll have live TV on your Mac within an hour. You can also buy a Slingbox and use the SlingPlayer software on Mac OS X and watch live TV that way as well. These are a couple of popular options which I think will help you. Thanks for the question, Sonny.

It is currently invite only, but you guys can get in by following this link – http://tinyurl.com/flickchartreg . What FlickChart does is gives you a simple interface to compare movies. You pick your favorite out of the two and it gives you another one. Rinse and repeat. It’s easy to get caught up in this as you sometimes get some hard comparisons that you can share with friends. FlickChart has ties into FriendFeed and is planning on adding Twitter and Facebook support as well. It offers a good amount of charts to show your favorite movies based on the choices you make. Give FlickChart a try today!

In this video, I get a question from Brian who asks a multitude of questions! Brian wants to know: “1) Do you think there are people interested in hearing about what tech is the best bang for your buck(and/or tech noews and reviews from a college student’s viewpoint)? (yes, I know it’s very subjective, but I value your opinion) 2) What software are you using to publish those awesome videos and how did you setup your podcast and RSS feeds? (not just for the blogs but for podcasts too, and a flowchart-esque diagram would be sweet here) 3) Any tips on developing a personal brand? Tips on marketing yourself and getting started in the blogo/twitter-sphere? (I want to do this and share my information and knowledge with people) 4) Where’s that donate link on your site and how did you get it? (and send me a direct link, I feel like I owe you a few bucks for answering my questions)” Wow! What a list of questions. For 1, I believe there is a need for this type of thing on the internet. Low cost alternatives are becoming more popular in this tough economy. For 2, I use Ubercaster, please check out my podcast tutorial that I posted recently. For RSS, I use Feeder for Mac, but you can also use the built in RSS for blogging engines such as WordPress (through a plugin called Podpress) For video, I use Visualhub combined with Quicktime Pro 7. I’ve done videos on my techniques here on bwana.tv. For 3, be yourself, be consistent, and don’t give up I really don’t have a formula for developing a personal brand. And for 4, visit http://bwana.tv/donations for the many ways you can donate. Thanks for the questions Brian!

In this video, I do my best to provide a podcasting tutorial. I’ve received a great deal of requests to do this. I found it difficult to do a podcasting tutorial, without actually doing a podcast. Rather than do that, I go into the basic principles to maintain a successful podcast. This tutorial is broken out into 3 parts: Motivation, Equipment, and Production. In terms of motivation, make sure you choose a topic you are passionate about. Ask yourself the following before choosing a topic: “Am I able to talk about this topic for 15 minutes to someone who knows absolutely nothing about it” If you can do this, then you have a decent candidate for a topic. Choosing a topic is key to prevent podfading. As for equipment, start with a cheap microphone (microphone/headsets are fine and fairly cheap at Best Buy), your computer, and cheap software. The software I recommend you start with is Audacity (http://bit.ly/90H9M) which is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. There’s a good chance you’re using one of these OS’s, so Audacity is a good choice. As you get a few episodes under your belt, then it’s time to think about possibly upgrading your setup to a condenser mic/mixer setup. Finally, there’s production. Come up with a schedule that you’ll be able to keep. Don’t commit to a daily podcast right from the start. I recommend starting with a weekly or monthly schedule and see how it works out. There’s also the option of live podcasting vs offline podcasting. I recommend sticking with an offline production at first and as you get more shows done, think about doing a live show. Live shows can be a bit more difficult to setup, so keep that in mind. These are just a few pointers to the wide world of podcasting, but it should be enough to get you started and establish some goals. Remember, motivation is the most important factor in podcasting, if you can’t get past this step, consider doing something else Got a question, concern, or tip? Email me at help@bwana.tv. Enjoy!

In this video, I get a question from Luke who asks “My friend and I are both Windows users, all of our life. All of our software is in Windows and everything. We were each looking at purchasing a Mac. How was the transition from Windows to Mac, easy? Ballparking how much does it cost to buy all new Mac software (without installing vmware fusion in support for windows). We are both looking to heavily use iMovie and the iLife suite which already comes installed on a 09 Mac. Any advice?” Wow, what a question. There’s a lot of objectivity to this question, but I’ll do my best to answer. I came from a UNIX background, so the transition to Mac OS X was fairly seamless for me. In terms of software, I did have to buy Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop 7 which set me back quite a bit, but it was not absolutely necessary. Price which software you need, but also prioritize and determine if that software is absolutely necessary to have on the Mac. You can always utilize VMWare Fusion for some Windows software if you need to. The transition does take time and don’t rush into it. Also, don’t be afraid to try new software for the Mac. There are tons of great software titles out there that don’t get a lot of recognition, but the Mac community is very friendly and will help you in many ways. I hope this answered your question, Luke. Got a question, tip or concern? Email me at help@bwana.tv.

Try it yourself, after installing go to MSN.com and play a windows movie. You will have to put in a search in Cydia to find it” Thanks Roger! What a great tip! I also got this tip from other users, but Roger was first to submit. This application is great if you enjoy videos from the web. If you don’t want to be confined to iPhone compatible sites and Youtube, install this Mobile Safari plugin on your jailbroken iPhone to expand your horizon. To install, you first need to install the Cydia source (which can be found via Cydia Search for “iMobileCinema”). Next, install iMobileCinema itself and the SBSettings module. SBSettings will allow you to toggle the plugin on and off very easily. Once you’ve done all these steps, you can experience video on the web the way it behaves on your desktop computer. Unfortunately, not all video sites work with iMobileCinema. I was hoping Hulu.com would work, but it doesn’t Anyway, thanks Roger for this excellent tip! Enjoy!

In this video, I share a user tip from Roger, who writes: “Hello, I watched your video on Cycorder and I thought I might give you another idea for very easily getting your movies to your PC. The program I use and is so simple, it is DiskAid it is free ware and you can get it in itunes or at this website http://www.digidna.net/diskaid/ plug your iphone in and run program, the files from your iphone will show up look in the listed files in the right pane to find video click on video file. In the left pane click on video then click copy to folder you can choose from there where you want to save them. It is so easy” This application really makes transfer of video and other files an easy task for those intimidated by OpenSSL and low level file transfer tools. Given that it’s free, and works for Windows and Mac, it’s a great tip. Thanks Roger!
